2016 TREMÉ CREOLE GUMBO FESTIVAL New Orleans’ Premier Brass Band Showcase Welcome to the ninth annual Tremé Creole Gumbo Festival – New Orleans’ premier brass band showcase. If you love brass bands and gumbo – or, better yet, enjoying some delicious gumbo while listening to brass bands playing live in a beautiful New Orleans park – then this is the event for you. The 2016 Tremé Creole Gumbo Festival takes place Saturday, Nov. 12, and Sunday, Nov., 13, from 11 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. both days in Louis Armstrong Park. Admission is free. The festival is produced and presented by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, the nonprofit that owns the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell. Once again, we will host the finest display of traditional and contemporary New Orleans brass band jazz to be found anywhere on the planet. The world-famous, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band once again will headline the event. They'll be joined by many of our favorites, including the Hot 8, the To Be Continued, the Pinettes, the New Breed, the Soul Brass Band and many more. If you like your New Orleans jazz funky, punchy and hot, this is the place to be. And then there’s the gumbo. As we’ve done for years, we will offer a smorgasbord of New Orleans' signature dish, in a variety of styles – including (dare we say it?) vegan. Gumbo z’herbes, shrimp and oyster, chicken and andouille, Creole filé, dark roux, gluten-free and – yes – vegan – all of these and more will be served in our expanded food court. All 12 of our food vendors will offer their own unique interpretation of this New Orleans classic, along with other menu items. Sampling size portions will be available, so feel free to mix and match until you find your favorite. For us, gumbo symbolizes the melting-pot nature of New Orleans’ culture. It’s a spicy, savory blend of ingredients and influences – much like the mélange of cultures that led to the advent of jazz in and around New Orleans’ historic Tremé neighborhood. The Tremé Creole Gumbo Festival is our way of paying tribute to our ancestors and our cultural traditions – with great food, music and fun. As we did last year, we are merging our Arts Market with our Kids Area, with local artists leading interactive and creative workshops. FOOD VENDORS No, we’re not serving only vegan gumbo. If you love dark roux chicken and sausage gumbo, Creole filé gumbo, seafood gumbo and all sorts of other great stuff – from po-boys to shrimp ‘n’ grits – then come hungry. PARKING On Saturday, Nov. 12, free parking is available in the parking lots of the Mahalia Jackson Theatre. Enter via Basin Street. On Sunday, Nov. 13, parking is available for $15 per vehicle (cash only) at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre, and for $10 per vehicle (credit cards accepted) at Basin Street Station (501 Basin Street). FREE ADMISSION - DONATIONS ACCEPTED Admission to the Tremé Creole Gumbo Festival is free. But we will have donation boxes set up at most of the park entrances. If you want to help us keep our events free, please support us with the donation of your choice. Thank you. We realize that Armstrong Park is usually open to pets.
