This Academy Award–nominated black comedy was Almodóvar’s international breakthrough and secured his place at the vanguard of modern Spanish cinema. Distraught over her recent breakup with her lover, Pepa (Carmen Maura) prepares to overdose on sleeping pills, which she blends into a gazpacho so they'll go down easier. She is diverted from her suicide by her best friend Carmela (María Barranco), a fugitive from justice who needs a place to stay. A deliciously chaotic series of events follows.
