Occupying the Phoenix and adjacent patio, BROEL presents JOCKAHOMO, a gay art exhibition curated by JOHNNIE B. Characterized by hyper-masculine/homoeroticism, a taste for fetishism, and the cybersexual, the show features works by Skylar Fein Frank Michael Jones Brett LaBauve Jake Lazere Tommy Nocera Thomas Quentin Sims Bob Weisz for S W E T - a homo / erotic dance concept Each artist, from their own point of reference, addresses various aspects of gay culture in New Orleans through diverse media. Brett LaBauve's found images and Jake Lazere's play on cybersexual relationships opens up discussion about the role of social media in contemporary gay culture, while Thomas Quentin Sims' use of traditional THANK YOU bags found at local corner stores connect similar themes to aspects of modern American culture. Both Bob Weisz's video installation for S W E T - a homo / erotic dance concept featuring video clips from familiar gay films and imagery from gay pornography and Skylar Fein's "pop culture" typography in a new erotic context create a dialogue about the gay male in terms of mass American culture. Fetishism is explored from different perspectives in the work of Brett LaBauve, Skylar Fein, and Frank Michael Jones, and illustrate the range of particular fetishes within the local gay community. Collectively the works attempt to communicate local gay themes and concerns in terms of changing means of communication, modern American culture, and represent the varying sexual interests amongst contemporary local gay men. There will be an opening party in conjunction with the Prospect.2 satellite exhibition openings on Saturday, October 22nd from 6-9PM There will be a closing event Thursday, October 27th from 9-11PM with PS I'M GAY, the official JOCKAHOMO closing afterparty to follow upstairs at the eagle starting at 10:30pm - until.
