LGBT older adults have worse mental and physical health compared to heterosexual and cisgender older adults. LGBT older adults have higher risks of mental health issues, disability, and higher rates of disease and physical limitation than their heterosexual and cisgender counterparts.
LGBT older adults often fear being open with their healthcare providers for fear of mistreatment. Many go back into the closet when they enter long-term care facilities, where they frequently face discrimination from peers and staff.
