Bywater seafood shack
While you may not find a gay scene here, you will find a uniquely New Orleans experience with great seafood. Besides, it's located in the Bywater, and people don't really put superficial labels on life there.

It just doesn't get anymore local than this place
You will hear the real New Orleans accent here-- the one that sounds like Brooklyn. Singer Fats Domino eats here often (and is played a lot on the juke box). We were seated across from him recently. The seafood is fantastic. It's across the Street from a Naval Base in the Bywater district (next to the Marigny neighborhood), so filled with military guys and natives. A real local treasure. Go for lunch or early dinner, as they close by 8pm (and stop serving 15-30 minutes before). Try the (almost) all you can eat steamed Dungeness crab for less than $20.00. (Or any seafood dish.)
